Regrade and Pave with Binder only:
If you currently have a stone driveway we suggest paving in 3 steps.
Current Year:
1. The first thing we will do is send a crew to grade your driveway. They will regrade your existing stone and also add up to 2” of new crushed stone if it is needed in order to achieve proper grade. This stone will then be power rolled for a firm compaction. It is not common to pave the driveway on the same day that this work is performed and that is not a bad thing. We do encourage the driveway to be used after this grading occurs, walking and driving on it before we come back to pave. This continues to help the compaction of the driveway, and rain is also not a bad thing either! Rain saturating the stone and drying out helps to solidify this base even more, and a solid base results in a great final product!
2. We will return again to lay the asphalt. The pave crew will use a self-propelled paver to lay NYS Type 3 Binder and power roll this for compaction with a 5 ton vibratory roller, down to a compacted average of industry standards of 2-2.5”. They will add a barricade to the end of your driveway as we suggest no vehicle weight on this new pavement for 2 full days. Once this time has expired you are free to remove the tape and enjoy your new driveway!
Year Two
3. Your driveway does require one more layer of asphalt, or topcoat. The pave crew will again use a self-propelled paver to lay NYS Type 7 Topcoat and power roll this for compaction with a 5 ton vibratory roller, down to an average of industry standards of 1-1.5”. We recommend waiting one full year (or all 4 weather seasons) before installing this layer which allows time and various freeze and thaw conditions to settle the driveway. This is not something that always happens, but we have found that some areas tend to settle more than others. Anytime you are disturbing earth or stone there is a chance for this to happen. After this settling occurs we can install your topcoat, shimming any of these lower settled areas with more material for a level final product. The price to install topcoat is not typically quoted with your Regrade and Binder cost as material and labor prices change from year to year, so this price does fluctuate. We can however give you a reference price for your topcoat in that current years pricing for your budgeting purposes.
Excavate, Grade and Pave with Binder only:
If you currently have a very deteriorated driveway or would like to enlarge or install a new driveway to a currently grass or dirt area we suggest paving in 3 steps.
Current Year:
1. The first thing we will do is send a crew to excavate your driveway or new area to be paved. They will excavate the existing or new area and remove the spoils from your property. They will then install 6-8” of new crushed stone as needed in order to achieve proper grade. This stone will then be power rolled for a firm compaction. It is not common to pave the driveway on the same day that this work is performed and that is not a bad thing. We do encourage the driveway to be used after this excavation and grading occurs, walking and driving on it before we come back to pave. This continues to help the compaction of the driveway, and rain is also not a bad thing either! Remove, Grade and Pave with Binder only:
If you currently have a slightly deteriorated driveway with a good solid base we suggest paving in 3 steps.
Current Year:
1. The first thing we will do is send a crew to excavate your existing asphalt only or peel off that top layer of pavement. All spoils will be removed from your property. They will then grade your existing sub-base and install up to 2” of new crushed stone if needed in order to achieve proper grade. This stone will then be power rolled for a firm compaction. It is not common to pave the driveway on the same day that this work is performed and that is not a bad thing. We do encourage the driveway to be used after this excavation and grading occurs, walking and driving on it before we come back to pave. Resurface:
If you currently have a binder driveway or a solid driveway with some cracking and minor dips we suggest paving in 1 step.
Your driveway will be prepped for paving – the crew will do any minor grass cutting along the edge of your existing asphalt and clean the area to be paved of any foreign matter or loose debris (sand, stone, dirt, etc) with a power blower, as needed. They will remove any loose asphalt that can be done by hand if they deem it is necessary and shim all low and depressed areas that they can see. The pave crew will use a self-propelled paver to lay NYS Type 7 Topcoat and power roll this for compaction with a 5 ton vibratory roller, down to an average of industry standards of 1-1.5”. They will add a barricade to the end of your driveway as we suggest no vehicle weight on this new pavement for 3 full days. If we were NOT the contractor that installed your original base that we are resurfacing we will do our very best using your existing base to avoid cracking, settling and/or ponding of water, however this cannot be guaranteed.
A common occurrence after having your driveway resurfaced are power steering marks. These are caused when a car’s wheels are turned while the car is standing still. This can happen at any time after paving but happens even more so on very hot days when the asphalt is a little tackier. We do not warranty against power steering marks as the only way to avoid these are to be sure that your car is in motion while turning the wheel.
We do suggest sealing your driveway 1 full year after a resurface. The asphalt needs time to off-gas, dry-out and cure before sealer can be applied. We will send you a postcard reminder in the season following your resurface to remind you of this maintenance and to provide the price for Upstate Paving to perform this service.
sealing:
We suggest sealing your driveway 1 year after your topcoat is installed (or resurface). And then every 2 years after that initial sealing.
Upstate Paving no longer provides the service of driveway sealing, but it is still a necessary step to maintain your driveway. There are many reputable companies in our area that do provide this service.
